Ceramicist, Painter & Zinester

Christine Lykkeh

She/her

Copenhagen, Denmark

My practice mixes high-brow and low-brow culture where accessibility, imagination and the everyday meet. Working across illustration, painting, zines and ceramics, I use elements of magical realism to transform familiar narratives into surreal and symbolic worlds.

I find that the way we experience the world today as complicated, overwhelming, and full of forces beyond our control surprisingly close to the medieval worldview where existence was vast, complicated and incomprehensible. Medieval art reflected this in its maximalist, layered visual language: swirling patterns, fantastical creatures, and entire cosmologies compressed into a single page. This sensibility runs through my own work which embraces that same intense, otherworldly energy with a touch of spirituality and something recognizable.

The late, great filmmaker David Lynch described the concept of a personal hopper. The hopper is your accumulation of memories, feelings, dreams and relationships gathered throughout childhood and that becomes the well from which all creative work is drawn. One thing i show from my hopper, is my upbringing in rural Fyn on a farm outside of a tiny village that has existed since the Vikings. In that hilly landscape, trolls threw church bells and horse-rituals were said to take place on the tallest hill. I see these folktales as a way of connecting to our ancestors and to the recurring pattern of human history.

We can still see ourselves through old stories, and there is a growing need to reconnect with the past and our spirituality as we shape the future.

I often work with accessible, tactile materials such as cardboard, paper and clay. In my paintings I use mixed media, choosing the best possible material ( watercolour, gouache, acrylic, eyeshadow, colored pencil) for each element. In ceramics, I layer techniques with the same intention, combining clay slips, underglaze pencils, brush-on and dip glazes to give each piece depth and a handmade-by-a-human, painterly quality.

Across all media, my work aims to create a space where imagination becomes a shared language, and where stories are told that blur the ordinary and the fantastical.
